Downpayment Grant Programs In All 50 States

When it comes to buying a home, the process is very different from that of other major purchases. Most buyers must secure a loan known as a mortgage from a bank, credit union, or lending company.

One requirement for being approved for this loan is putting a portion of the home price, or down payment, towards the cost as a deposit. A typical down payment for a conventional mortgage is 20% of the home price. For a $200,000 home, that’s $40,000 of your own cash that you’ll have to pay upfront. While there are other loans that have smaller down payment requirements, this requirement can still be a barrier to home ownership. The good news is that each state has grant programs that offer funds for down payments, closing costs, and more.
